Review, Spec and exclusive photos: the Huawei TalkBand B5

0

The Huawei TalkBand B5 is the fourth generation of fitness trackers from the Chinese giant and, like its predecessors, combines a conventional-looking fitness tracker with a bluetooth headset.

Its biggest feature, in fact, is the ability to remove the main body and use it as a Bluetooth headset.

So if you’re running and you get a call for example, you just have to take the TalkBand B5 out of its strap and put it in your ear.

Design

In appearance, Huawei B5 follows the classic design of the typical Huawei fitness tracker: a rectangular main body mounted on a metal case.

Our TalkBand is the sports version in grey, but there are 5 different colours and straps to choose from:

The upper part of the TalkBand B5 is made of stainless steel and brushed metal.

The left and right edges follow the curve of the wrist, leaving room for the side buttons: two symmetrical buttons at the bottom of the display.

By pressing them, the main module can be removed, to be used as a headset:

The bottom layer of the TalkBand B5 is made of plastic, and houses the heartbeat sensors and fitness functions:

As for comfort, the strap is adjustable and has good breathability and sweat absorption.

The body of the Huawei TalkBand B5 (excluding the strap) weighs less than 40 grams, follows the curve of the wrist and is not too cumbersome at all:

Display

Compared to the previous generation (TalkBand B3), the most obvious upgrade is the display: from black and white to a 1.13-inch AMOLED color display with a resolution of 160 x 300 pixels, covered by 2.5D glass.

The display area has been expanded by 2.4 times compared with before:

With a surface dedicated to a larger display, the content that can be displayed on the screen is greatly increased; some notifications can be read at a glance, and even the scroll for longer messages has decreased.

Functions and Use

Huawei has finally introduced all the main functions to monitor health: heart rate detection and a new sleep monitoring system. Combining heart rate changes, rest periods and other data, Huawei B5 can monitor a variety of sleep patterns, identify problems and provide recommendations on how to sleep better or reduce stress.

To use: Press the power button on the right side to reactivate the screen and directly access the top-level menu interface. Scroll up and down to change functions and tap to access the specific function interface. Scroll left to right on the screen to return to the top level.

Obviously, Huawei has a dedicated app that you need to download to your phone, and that allows us to connect to the band via Bluetooth. When connecting, you need to open the “Bluetooth Pairing” function in the TalkBand Settings interface.

There is also a special function for stress detection. According to Huawei, the TalkBand B5 can physiologically evaluate the user’s stress levels and help alleviate them through biofeedback games and respiratory training.

Other features, such as motion tracking, are not very different from other wearable products on the market.

Bluetooth headset

The most prominent feature of the TalkBand B5 is the integrated Bluetooth headset in the body of the watch itself.

Just press the lock button on both sides, and the main body can be used as a Bluetooth headset. It is worth mentioning that the upper part of the bracelet is magnetic, in order to prevent involuntary detachment.

In terms of wearability, the headset is comfortable but cannot be used during intense physical activity.

So, the TalkBand B5 is both a Bluetooth headset and a smart bracelet. It definitely simplifies the call answering procedure, even if it is not yet perfect in terms of sound quality.
