Nokia X6 Review: An iPhone X for 170 Euros?

Nokia held a press conference yesterday for the launch of the Nokia X6; a 5.8-inch full-screen smartphone with a 19:9 ratio and a small notch on the screen.

The X6 uses the Snapdragon 636 processor, Android 8.1 and offers 3GB / 4GB / 6GB storage space + 32GB / 64GB expansion.

Hmd Global was founded in May 2016 by several former executives of Nokia and Foxconn. Headquartered in Finland, Nokia’s rights to use the Nokia brand are guaranteed for more than ten years. Hmd is responsible for R & D design and is produced by Foxconn. This means that the Nokia phones you will see in the next ten years are all designed and produced by hmd.

In December 2016, under the guidance of hmd, the Nokia brand went back on the market and in January 2017, the Nokia 6 was released. In the following 16 months, hmd  launched as many as 16 Nokia phones, including the latest arrival, which we’re looking at today: the Nokia X6.

The Nokia X6 uses a full screen design, with a small “notch” on the top of the 5.8-inch screen.

Although the Nokia X6 is a relatively inexpensive smartphone (starting at around 169 euros), it does not compromise and shows attention to detail. For example, in order to maintain the consistency and integrity of your visual perspective, the screen of the Nokia X6 has rounded corners that correspond exactly to the curvature of the edges of the phone.

The screen is interrupted by a small space at the top for the front camera, and a border at the bottom with the Nokia logo. The Nokia X6 uses a 2.5D glass design for the back, perfectly connected to the edges of the metal frame. On the back we find the double rear camera with flash, the sensor for fingerprints and the Nokia logo, all arranged along the axis of the phone.

At the top, there is a 3.5 mm headphone jack, while the power button and the volume button are on the right hand side. On the lower part we find, from left to right, a microphone, a USB Type-C port and speakers.

Overall, the Nokia X6 really surprised us. For a smartphone in this price range, it isn’t necessarily normal to see such a meticulous design and choice of materials, such as using Corning Gorilla Glass to protect the display. The Nokia X6 is available in three colours: black, dark blue and polar white.

Hardware and Performance

The Nokia X6 is equipped with the new generation Qualcomm Snapdragon 636 chipset (with performance comparable to the Snapdragon 660), with 6GB of RAM. Certainly, the performance is excellent. This chipset has 40% more CPU and GPU than the previous generation of Snapdragon 630, and there is no pressure when multitasking online.

Geekbench scores are good, with a single-core score of 1331, and a multi-core score of 4820.

The Nokia X6 is equipped with the latest Android 8.1 operating system, with a user interface in the popular Aurora gradient. In addition to the standard fingerprint unlocking, the Nokia X6 also supports facial recognition unlocking, which can be activated instantly by raising your hand (there’s no need to manually light up the screen).

The Nokia X6 has a 16MP front camera, and a dual 16MP + 5MP rear camera. The main lens of the camera captures the color and the lens of the secondary camera takes care of the detail. In addition, there are professional-grade blurring effects and the focus intensity of photographs can be adjusted as desired.

Of course, for selfie lovers, Nokia X6 also has a new generation of AI beauty algorithm applied to the front camera. It can naturally adjust to more than 128 details on the face and you can add animations in a similar way to on the iPhone X.
