You gotta hand it to Xiaomi. Even with its hands full being busy dominating smartphone markets across the globe, it was still able to release on schedule a new line flagship line for 2018. The Xiaomi Mi 8 Series features 3 phones, the Mi 8, Mi 8 SE, and the top-of-the-line Mi 8 Explorer Edition. In this article, we’ll take a look at the most feature packed version, the Mi 8 Explorer Edition.

Let’s start with the specs. At 6.21 inches, the phone is massive, yet still easy to hold mainly because of the super thin bezels that maximized the device’s real estate. That gorgeuos AMOLED panel is from Samsung and it produces stunning colors with deep blacks and vibrant hues.

Running the show is a Snapdragon 845 processor backed by a generous 8GB of RAM coupled with 128GB of internal storage. The battery is decent at 3000maH though I personally think they should have slapped a higher-capacity juice source given the screen size. It runs on Android 8.0 Oreo with Xiaomi’s own MIUI OS on top of it.

Rounding up the spec sheet are the usual laundry list of features: dual-sim capability, Wi-Fi, GPS, Bluetooth, NFC, USB OTG, 3G and 4G, Compass and Magnetometer, Proximity sensor, Accelerometer, Ambient light sensor, Gyroscope and Barometer.

You’re probably thinking, “That’s great and all but that’s what all 2018 Android phones use.” So what sets the Xiaomi Mi 8 Explorer Edition from its rivals? First off, it boasts of a 3D Facial Recognition technology that was popularized by the iPhone X. This allows users to unlock their phones using their face in the most advanced and secured way possible. And as if focusing on security, it also comes with an in-display fingerprint technology (courtesy of Synaptics’) which allows users a second option for unlocking their Mi 8 Explorer Edition by simply placing their fingers on a dedicated spot on the screen.

To raise things up a notch, the phone features a transparent back that is not only unique, but is absolutely cool to look at as well.

The Xiaomi Mi 8 Explorer Edition is priced very competitively at $577. At this price, it makes it seems like a very tempting proposal to someone shopping for a new flagship smartphone. Why spend $800 or more for a new top-of-the-line phone when you can get it for less than $600? Xiaomi sure knows how to entice the market.
