Playback capabilities and performance
Magicsee N5 is equipped with a proven and efficient hardware combo that consists of Amlogic S905X quad-core processor and Mali 450 penta-core GPU. Although this isn’t the most powerful setup found in TV Boxes – Mali 450 is already six years old – it is sufficient enough to run most Android games or playback videos in 4K encoded by H.265 and in 60 fps. You won’t experience lags, frame skipping, random freezes and cumbersome buffering that will trouble you and spoil the fun. The Wi-Fi reception is also impressive and it helps enjoying online games and high resolution movies played back from Netflix or Youtube.
The box works under Android 7.1.2, which means that you can install any app from the Google store, including additional players, codecs for more unusual formats (although by default it should play > 95% of the movies you’ll load), and even games to play on your TV. 2 GB of RAM enables efficient multitasking, which might be important if you’ll be using N5 also as an internet browser – and you can effectively do it by plugging in keyboard and mouse into USB ports.
Connectivity and interface
The fast internet connection is provided by two-channel WiFi 2.4 GHz / 5 GHz and a cable Ethernet, the latter operating at a maximum speed of 100 Mbps. The files can be stored on a 16 GB internal disk, but since a solid part of this space is occupied by the operating system, it’s worth to increase available storage. You can do it in several ways: the easiest one is adding a memory card – the maximum supported capacity is 64 GB. You can also keep files on an external drive or pendrive, plugged to USB port. Finally, you can use some cloud file sharing service that will work really well here, thanks to the fast WiFi modem. Miracast, DLNA and Airplay allows for easy, wireless connection with smart TV at maximum 1080p resolution.
Included in the box is stock remote that allows controlling the user interface and access all functions. If you’d like to get even more mileage from this TV Box and possibly use it as an Android PC, we recommend buying an air mouse or a Bluetooth keyboard, which you can also find at in Chinese stores online.
Magicsee N5 is enclosed in a small black case, and it has minimal looks, similar to Xiaomi TV Box. It should present itself good in every living room, especially because of the blue LED clock on the front that shows current time. It does not have any special bracket for wall mounting though.
We didn’t observe any random resets which means that it’s properly designed to prevent overheat while working. The power consumption is also small and this TV Box is powered by a standard 5V / 2A power supply.
This small box conceals lots of processing power inside and in terms of playback performance can compete with expensive TV Boxes – it’s actually a powerhouse, considering the price. It has everything you can expect from a multimedia entertainment center. Magicsee N5 is solidly made, has fast WiFi and looks good. Wonderful media player for watching videos in 4K on a big screen that muscles out many competitors!
