Legend Come Back: Motorola Razr Relaunching as Folding Smartphone
It was one of Motorola's most popular device when Motorola was Motorola.
Now the firm is part of Lenovo, which apparently wants to take advantage of the nostalgic pull to resurrect that model, although with a format very different from the original.
The Motorola Razr, Motorola’s famous “smartphone,” is expected to make a triumphant return to the mobile market in 2019, according to The Wall Street Journal. According to newspaper sources, the handset will be relaunched by Lenovo as a foldable smartphone, which possibly will cope with Samsung’s Galaxy Infinity Flex device.
The Wall Street Journal indicates that the smartphone is already being tested and should be released next month in partnership with the Verizon operator in the United States. The price of the smartphone should be very salty: US $1,500.
The Mobile World Congress 2019 takes place from February 20 and can be the launching pad for the new Lenovo device. The question that now remains – will the device have a flip design, similar to the first devices with the Razr brand?
No details are known about whether it will be sold outside the US, but this device will be manufactured in a limited number: the same sources indicate that 200,000 units of this super high-end model will be produced.
The legacy of the Motorola Razr is remarkable: the first model, with “shell” format, appeared in 2004 with the Motorola Razr V3. It was one of the most popular models in the market, as they ended up selling more than 130 million units worldwide and, in its promotion, ads were published with celebrities such as the singer Fergie or the footballer David Beckham.
Since 2014, when Lenovo acquired Motorola, we do not have any great news involving the Razr line. Motorola’s attempts to revive the Razr brand have not been as successful. In 2011, they launched the Droid Razr also with Verizon, but they were not very successful.
If the rumors were fulfilled, Lenovo would be another one that would bet on this type of device with a folding screen. We have already seen a first protagonist in this area with the FlexPai, but it is expected that in the coming weeks’ other major mobility companies such as OPPO or Samsung will announce a product in this same line.
