In 2018, Huawei has revolutionized the mobile phone camera significantly, overtaken Apple in terms of market share and released several bestselling smartphones. A reason to celebrate and to slow it down in 2019? – Not for Huawei! The Chinese are not thinking of idleness, but are already in the middle of preparations for 2019. In an interview with AndroidPit, Huawei’s Europe boss Walter Ji reveals what his company is currently preparing.

Quad camera smartphone with 10x zoom

Hardly any other manufacturer has shaped the smartphone camera in the last few years as much as Huawei. The Chinese pioneered both the dual camera and the triple camera. The latter was introduced in 2018 with the Huawei P20 Pro.

In an interview with a German website, Walter Ji, leader of the Huawei in Europe, has revealed some of the Chinese company’s plans for 2019. Several exciting information has been highlighted, but perhaps the most curious and impressive has to do with the next top-of-the-line camera set of the company.

According to what Ji said, the company is planning to put four cameras in the back of its next top of the line and would also offer the 10x optical zoom. Today, Huawei is the only company in the world to sell a smartphone with 5x optical zoom (Mate 20 Pro) but seems to be interested in leaving competitors even further behind in this regard.

“Next year we will definitely see more innovation in the camera, and now we have three, imagine four for next year,” said Ji. “Three or five times the zoom is not enough, ten times the zoom inconsistent quality with the smartphone, this is unique! In these areas, we research, and there we could have one or the other surprise for you.”

The executive has not revealed whether this news on the cameras will arrive via the P30 or Mate 30 to 2019. There is also the possibility that this powerful set of cameras appear first in the foldable smartphone that the Chinese plans to launch next year.

This particular device would also be the first model with connectivity 5G of the brand, which would bring “dramatic speed improvements and everything would be available without any delay,” said Ji.

5G and foldable smartphones – the future is near

Like many other manufacturers, Huawei has announced a foldable smartphone for 2019, which should also be 5G enabled. Walter Ji assumes that the new mobile standard 5G will turn the smartphone world upside down.

Still, he expressed a bit of concern about 5G. Because of the very differentiated frequencies used by the new standard, smartphone manufacturers will have to be very creative with the antenna design in their handsets to get connected to several different bands.

If this is indeed the case, we may eventually have fragmentation problems of the 5G, with smartphones working only on some operators or even in some countries. In these cases, there would be several versions of the same phone, which would make it difficult to buy from import sites, for example.

Huawei is, therefore, preparing to develop the smartphone AI in such a way that it autonomously decides which network is needed.

Does Huawei leap to the top?

With the P20 Pro and the Mate 20 Pro, Huawei 2018 has set two milestones that have taken the company a long way. Huawei is now with Apple and Samsung finally one of the big three smartphone manufacturers.

According to Ji, Huawei is planning to abandon the entry smartphone market starting next year completely. As a result, the brand would only sell top-of-the-range handsets and premium intermediaries. The executive says these devices have poor performance and limited resources, and the Huawei brand should no longer be associated with such things.

But there is another explanation for this. Entry smartphones basically do not make a profit by being sold for very low prices. In addition, there is a lot of competition from small brands in this segment, which further pulls down the unit value of these devices. In addition, the company wants to attract even more attention with new flagship stores.
