Google Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL: The Magic is Back in the Software

There was no surprise. The new Google Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL, presented by Google are just what we expected to see - small internal improvements, subtle aesthetic changes and a camera as promising as its predecessors

After the events of Samsung and Apple is the turn of Google, which has chosen today, October 9, to publicize its new hardware products. Google’s Pixel 3 and 3 XL are among the most important Android devices of the year. They show not only where the journey with Android is going, but also that Google is serious about its hardware ambitions.

Creative marketing, controlled filtration or chance. Presentations of high-consumption technology products stopped being interesting a long time ago. Few companies in the sector such as Apple or Samsung manage to capture so much interest as to follow their presentations at their fingertips and as a mass spectacle.

In most of the times, the characteristics and designs of the products that are launched are aired on the Internet days before. But in the case of the new Pixel 3 XL has been released too hasty.

The new smartphones

After having marked a bit important last year with the Pixel 2 XL, for many consumers the best camera on a mobile, Google aims to repeat the formula with its successor, the Pixel 3 XL, whose benefits are already known in full for weeks.

Google is getting ready to fight against Apple, which recently launched its new iPhone XS. The internet giant presented its new Pixel 3 and the muscular version, the Pixel 3 XL, which will undoubtedly be the most interesting model. With few aesthetic changes, the device will take advantage of its unique lens essential element with sharpening its debug software to create the so-called “bokeh” effect or portrait mode.

Despite the trend in the industry to launch phones with two cameras, or even three, as in the case of the Huawei P20 Pro, the American firm will remain in its single-camera setup at the back. It has a unique 12-megapixel sensor. But this decision will also have its limitations since the terminal will not be able to zoom optical two-fold like other rivals. On the front, it has the camera with an 8-megapixel sensor, which will also have a portrait mode.

Pixel 3 XL: Google Phone with the deep notch

While the Pixel 2 XL had a six-inch display installed, the dimensions remain nearly identical: the Pixel 3 XL will be 157.9x 76.7×7.9 millimeters in size (6.3 inches), and its predecessor is 157.9x 76.7 x 7.9 millimeters in size. The weight of the XL model is 184 grams.

As with its predecessors, Google continues to rely on a single 12.2-megapixel sensor for the main camera, while most companies now use dual or even triple cameras. Nevertheless, we assume that the Pixel-3 camera will again be outstanding through the use of “Computational Photography.”

In the front camera, Google installed two eight-megapixel sensors with different focal lengths on both models. The XL model has a 3,430 mAh battery under the hood and can be recharged wirelessly like once the Nexus 4 and 5 via Qi Wireless.

The smartphone houses a Snapdragon 845 microprocessor from Qualcomm, the most powerful at the moment, accompanied by 4GB of RAM and with two versions of 64 and 128 GB storage. A trend that will continue will be the incorporation of a tab or “notch” like the one that last year popularized the iPhone X as a solution to gain space on the screen without sacrificing size. But this attribute will come only in the larger model, the Pixel 3 XL.

Thus, the 6.3-inch screen on the Pixel 3 XL will be an OLED-type panel with a resolution of 2,960 × 1,440 pixels. Both devices will have stereo speakers and no headphone jack.

Pixel 3: The smaller 5.5-inch model without Notch

The smaller model will have a 5.5-inch display with an aspect ratio of 18: 9 and 2,160 x 1,080 pixels on board and the notch is omitted. The front is reminiscent of the Pixel 2 XL with its stereo speakers and rounded corners. Despite the larger display, it has the dimension of 145.6×68.2×7.9 millimeters not larger than the Pixel 2. The battery of the 148-gram Pixel 3 is not particularly large at 2,915 mAh.

As with the XL model, the main camera consists of only one sensor and protrudes a bit out of the case. Both Pixel 3 devices are of 8.6 millimeters thick.

On the software side, Android 9 Pie will be pre-installed at the factory. Although Google released its major OS update in early August, the Pixel models will once again be among the first to run on Pie.

Smart camera

The cameras were the stars of the show in the presentation of Pixel 3 and 3 XL. Google explained how these elements had been improved from one generation to the next, saying they made adjustments to what was “already the best mobile camera in the world.”

However, very detailed specifications were not disclosed. The rear sensor remains unique with 12.2 MP and f/1.8 aperture. The advances were all provided by new features and improvements in processing with artificial intelligence. All thanks to Pixel Visual Core.

With the “Top Shot” feature, your smartphone can take photos before and after you tap the capture button. So, if your final image looks bad, with eyes closed, people blurred, things blurred, etc., the smartphone is able to choose a more appropriate option from its “instant backup.”

The company also plans that users of the Pixel 3 will no longer use the flash because of the night mode, which takes a series of captures in different exposures. Putting them together, the device achieves clearer and vivid images even in dark environments.

On the front, the brand still placed a second camera with a wide-angle lens, which allows to enlarge the area and show more people in the photo. The portrait mode of the front and rear cameras of the Pixel 3 and 3 XL has also been improved, and it is now possible to adjust the blur intensity and change the focus plane after capture.

We also have Google Lens running automatically in the background and a host of other features. AR stickers, for example, are more interactive and make the photos more fun with the inclusion of Marvel characters such as Iron Man and Hulk.

Google Plus Gift Wizard

Google Assistant is more functional than ever on the new Mountain View Giant smartphones. One of the significant improvements is the arrival of Google Duplex, that AI technology presented by the company in I/O 2018. The service will be able to make calls and talk with humans to schedule times in the hairdresser, for example, without you having to make a call.

This should only reach a few US cities gradually, and we do not have a timeline for countries. Either way, Duplex also gained a new feature called “Call Screen.”

When you receive a call from an unknown number, you can ask the Call Screen to answer instead. Then he talks to the person on the other end of the line and discovers the subject of the call. A transcript appears on your screen, and you can choose whether you want to reject or accept the call.

Another smart feature is Flip to shhhh. You turn the phone down, and it completely mutes all notifications, allowing you to have a quiet dinner with the family, for example.

Pixel Stand

A major innovation in these smartphones is the presentation of wireless charging in the Qi standard. Therefore, the company presented along with mobile phones the Pixel Stand charger, which would be the smartest accessory in the world in its category.

This is because the Pixel 3 and 3 XL transform when they are placed in this loader base. The device interface gets bigger icons and brings in useful details like easy access to notifications, weather forecasting, and music.

This base even turns the phone into a more interesting alarm clock by modifying the brightness of the display as the time comes to agree. Details of your day are also displayed on the screen. In summary, with Pixel Stand, the new phones become a Google Home Hub.

More Security

Google has talked extensively about digital safety and wellness at its Pixel presentation event. The new smartphones come with a chip called Titan Security, capable of encrypting all content stored on the smartphone, including data from apps.

Titan Security also protects the integrity of the operating system itself and ensures that details such as your fingerprints are not stolen should someone gain physical access to your device. In other words, the chip virtually eliminates the chances that the cell phone will be hacked with traditional methods.

In addition, the digital welfare features announced in I/O 2018 will first reach the Pixel 3 and 3 XL, and will be released later for the other devices of the brand and finally for models from other manufacturers.

Finally, in the box, the new phones come with a version of the Pixel Buds wired and USB-C connection. It is also worth mentioning the IP68 protection, which makes the device waterproof.

Both smartphones are already pre-sold in the US, but only reach the shelves on October 18. The common Pixel 3 with 64 GB of space comes out for $799 and 3 XL for $899, on the same storage option.
