Everything About the Huawei Mate X – The New Modern Foldable and 5G Smartphone

Huawei has introduced the highly anticipated Mate X. A serious competitor for Samsung’s Galaxy Fold and other future foldable phones. Once unfolded, it has an 8-inch slab.

There is no doubt that 2019 will be the year of foldable smartphones. Only a few days after the announcement of the Samsung Galaxy Fold, the Chinese manufacturer Huawei replicates with its Mate X. Both devices operate in a similar design, but several important technical choices differentiate them.

Huawei presented on Sunday (24) during MWC 2019 its first foldable smartphone. It is the Huawei Mate X, a model that had leaked two days before the event – which did not spoil the surprise, because it is equally impressive to see the device in official images and be used in real time.

Relevant design

While Samsung offers two screens, a small 4.6 inches on the outside and a large foldable 7.3 inches on the inside, Huawei chose to integrate a single foldable slab of 8 inches.

The Huawei Mate X folds out, contrary to what we saw in the Galaxy Fold, from Samsung. It means that it works like an 8″ tablet (with 8:71 aspect ratio and 2480×2200 pixels resolution) when it is open; and it features a cut two-screen interface, one on each side of the device, with 6.25″ and 6.6″ – even higher than the iPhone XS Max when it is closed. A rather relevant choice to contain the thickness – 11 mm when folded and 5.4 mm unfolded. In “smartphone” mode, the user takes advantage and integrate the photosensors.

On the rear screen, which is slightly smaller, the camera sensors and the biometric reader are also in a sidebar. It may seem weird at first glance, but apart from housing these components, it also helps hold the tablet with one hand.

In terms of internal features, it has a high-end SoC Kirin 980, but also an internal developed 5G Balong 5000 modem that offers theoretical rates up to 4.5 Gb/s. In addition to being specialized in artificial intelligence, it also ensures optimum performance for multitasking, one of the biggest utilities of a foldable smartphone.

There is the presence of a 4500 mAh battery compatible with fast charging. According to Huawei, it is possible to go from 0 to 85% in just 30 minutes. However, a few details on the photo part. We know that sensors are developed by Leica.

There is no notch, and the edge is as thin as possible, following the “Full View” visual identity of the manufacturer’s displays. The Huawei Mate X still comes with a protective case that makes the back screen (in closed mode) fully protected from scratches and scratches.

Foldable screen, but outside

The rear display can be used for specific functions, and the rear cameras can be used on the front side, which enhances the quality of the self. In addition, the device is already enabled for the 5G, the new generation of mobile networks.

The design style is called “Falcon Wing” and features a sophisticated hinge, able to make the device fold completely and leave no space between the two halves closed.

How did Huawei get it? Huawei has its own patents that allow a hinge with almost 100 components. Besides, the Power button and the digital player are on the side of the screen.

Multitasking is guaranteed with a side-by-side navigation mode, where you can do two completely different tasks on each half of the device in tablet mode – and even interact with them by dragging files from an app to the another.

It will be marketed in the second half of 2019, for 2299 euros, which gives about $2,600 – a much higher value than the Galaxy Fold, which was revealed for $1.9 thousand. Huawei explained that the price is this because of 5G technology and the manufacturing changes that the brand had to make to make the device possible.

It will be officially launched in late 2019.
