Elephone S8 Review: unboxing & testing
On the Chinese smartphone market, clones – or famous smartphone copies – are hardly new. And they are almost always described as inferior to the original. But the Elephone S8 is trying to overturn the situation, starting with the screen. The trend of the moment is, in fact, the “borderless” screen, and Elephone has focused everything on the display, which is not only better than the Xiaomi Mi Mix 2 – at least according to the pixel count – but is presented as triple bezel-less 2k display .
In this article, in addition to unboxing and exclusive photos, we tested Elephone S8, installing different benchmark applications. Let’s see if what bloggers define as “ready for the big challenge” is up to expectations.
In the essential box of Elephone S8 we find: a power supply, a USB Type-C cable, the user manual in English and a silicone cover.
The back of the Elephone S8 is shiny and reflective, creating beautiful plays of light on the surface. The design is similar to the line of HTC phones this year, except for the fact that Elephone S8 does not use the same resistant glass. The edges – almost non-existent – on the front are in 3D curved glass .
On the right, we find the power button and the volume control; on the left side, it’s the slot for the SIM card. Elephone S8 can host two SIMs simultaneously – dual SIM dual standby.
The fingerprint reader is located at the bottom frame of the front panel. At the bottom edge, we find only the USB Type-C (but included in the package is a USB-C audio jack adapter) and two speakers .
The size of Elephone S8 is 15.8 x 8 x 0.8 cm, weighs 180g and is available in blue and black.
The display is undoubtedly the highlight of Elephone S8: 6 inches without borders and with Quad-HD resolution 2K (2560 × 1440).
S8 is called by Elephone tri-bazel-less, because the smartphone frame is almost invisible on three of the four sides; the screen / body ratio is 92.4%, against 91.3% of the Xiaomi Mix. Moreover, the whole body of S8 is smaller than Mi Mix, and therefore easier to hold in hand. The colors are brilliant and the resolution seems to really make the difference, especially for videos or games in full screen:
Elephone S8 mounts the Deca-core processor MediaTek Helio X25 (MT6757CD) at 2.5GHz, pairing with 4GB of RAM and 64GB of storage space. It is equipped with the latest Android 7.0 Nougat operating system and both the user interface and the icons are almost standard. The smartphone can also be set in multilanguages.
We have installed some benchmark APPs to test the performance of the Elephone S8.
Elephone S8 Antutu score: 76109

Update Elephone S8_Android 7.1.1_20171018
Elephone has released an official update to fix some bugs.
At the moment the firmware is only found through OTA, then it will also be released via file for a full flash using SP FLASH TOOL.
I remind you that for a better functionality of the firmware, a hard reset is recommended after installing the firmware.

There is no dual camera for Elephone S8 but on paper it should be decent: a 21MP camera with Sony IMX lenses. But in our tests we had some problems with focusing, which often takes a second and a half before being able to focus clearly on the subject. When the camera is focused, you can get good pictures, provided the lighting is good. But the speed of focusing is sometimes a problem.
The camera application is easy to use and comes with a set of fun filters. For videos you can record up to 4K, but there is no OIS (optical image stabilization).
Much like the Xiaomi Mi Mix, the 8MP front camera is on the bottom, which means you have to put the phone upside down to take a selfie.
Elephone S8 has a 4000mAh battery with fast charge. We remind you that the USB port is Type C.
