Another World’s First – Samsung Galaxy A9 Debuts with 4 Cameras

Taking on camera-centric Chinese smartphone players head on, Samsung introduces first smartphone with four cameras

In recent years, we have become accustomed to seeing how mobile phone manufacturers get through with cameras. Some like Google have thought they only need a lens to take some great pictures as we saw with the Google Pixel 3, while others have mounted on their larger models two and up to three lenses as we have seen in the Samsung Galaxy S9+ or the Huawei P20 Pro.

But it is precisely the Korean firm that wants to give a bell this year according to what you have right up. Samsung has finally made official the much-rumored Samsung Galaxy A9. It is the world’s first phone that has neither a second camera nor triple, but four in total in the back. The new mid-range phone will use the four sensors to take pictures of different types and in different environments.

Not all are the four cameras in the new Samsung Galaxy A9. The South Korean manufacturer has included a 6.3-inch super AMOLED screen at 1080 x 2220 pixels. All in a device of 162.5 x 77 x 7.8 mm and 183 grams of weight.

Its design follows the manufacturer’s guidelines and maintains a central fingerprint reader at the rear. The front symmetry is also maintained without adding any notch and with the same frame thickness at the top and bottom. The phone has curved edges and a slight curvature on the screen to join the edge and make it more ergonomic.

Inside Samsung has opted for two different versions. One of them comes with 6 GB of RAM, while the other one has 8 GB. Both have storage of 128 GB and Micro SD slot to expand storage. The battery that powers this phone is 3,720 mAh and will come with Android Oreo 8.0.

Four cameras of Samsung A9

The Samsung Galaxy A9 brings us four cameras in its back and one in the front. Why so many cameras? We can ask ourselves unlike other manufacturers such as Google that opt for a single camera in the recently launched Pixel 3 and Pixel 3L with full of artificial intelligence, Samsung tries to offer cameras dedicated to each type of photography. This is what we will find in the five cameras (four rear and one front) available:

  • Main camera: 24 MP and aperture f/1.7, this camera is the one that will be used for most photographs taken.
  • Telephoto: 10 MP with 2x optical zoom and aperture f/2.4, it is used to achieve an optical zoom without loss of detail by not cropping the image.
  • Ultra-wide: 8 MP with an angle of 120º and aperture of f/2.4, this camera is designed to capture larger scenes and get all the elements in the photograph to be bought together.
  • Depth: 5 MP and aperture of f/2.2, the camera that will allow you to take photographs in portrait mode and play with the bokeh of the images.
  • Front: 24 MP and f/2.0 aperture, it is designed to take selfies in detail with that 24MP that match the back.

How these four cameras work together and in real life at the moment is hard to tell. Everything depends on how optimized the software is placed by Samsung to make them work.

Versions and prices

The Samsung Galaxy A9 comes in a total of three different colors and two different internal models. It can be purchased either with 6 GB of RAM or with 8 GB of RAM. While the available colors are Caviar Black (black), Lemonade Blue (turquoise) and Bubblegum Pink (pink). The availability of colors may also vary by country. The starting price for the Samsung Galaxy A9 is 599 euros and will be available in mid-November.

The Galaxy A range is undoubtedly one of the most successful in the Samsung catalog, among other things because it usually balances good features with a moderately affordable price.
