Qualcomm to Announce Snapdragon Wear 3100 Chip for Smart Watches?
Smartwatches with Wear OS will try to re-launch with the Snapdragon Wear 3100
Currently, an invitation from Qualcomm to an event in San Francisco on September 10th will make you curious. The focus is on smartwatches, as shown by the presentation of the invitation. Will the chip be available in a month to power Google’s Pixel Watch?
Qualcomm has begun sending journalists an invitation for a presentation scheduled for September 10. While not revealing what will be announced on the day, the set of invitation elements makes it clear that this is a new chip for wearable computing devices skewed with Wear OS (formerly Android Wear).
Since 2016, smart watches with the Google system often use Snapdragon Wear 2100, which should finally win an update. In May of this year, Qualcomm announced that it was working with Google to create a new processor dedicated to wearable devices, and it is probably the fruit of this wedding that is the highlight of the presentation scheduled for September.
Pankaj Kedia, senior director and responsible for the wearable area at Qualcomm, had already revealed in May that they would work on the third generation of wearable SoCs. He did not name technical details but emphasized that it was a completely redesigned chip. A first in the face of the history of the two previous generations.
The version of the Snapdragon 400, which was first introduced in smartwatches and other wearables, was only optimized in a few places and only received a successor in the form of the Snapdragon Wear 2100 in February 2016.
In principle, however, it was based on its predecessor but has been changed in several places to be fair to the claims of wearables. This was followed by the Snapdragon Wear 1100 and Snapdragon Wear 1200 offshoots for simpler end devices, as well as the Snapdragon Wear 2500 for children’s smartwatches last June.
The Snapdragon Wear 2100 is currently in many smartwatches. The chip, which was specially designed for wearables, is now a good two years old and therefore no longer up to date. The new Snapdragon Wear 3100 is rumored to offer no huge leap in development since it will probably be built again in the outdated 28-nanometer process. After all, in addition to slight increases in power, especially the power consumption should decrease. It should also bring 4G LTE.
The new Snapdragon Wear 3100 christened SoC Qualcomm is working together with some OEMs for more than two years. The focus is on the assumptions of efficiency and scalability. Because the new model would not only be compatible in smartwatches, but also in IoT devices and AR and VR glasses.
The presentation of the new processor also opens the door to the arrival of a possible Pixel Watch, a Google own smartwatch, a product that has already been rumored this year. If this prediction is correct, the clock should appear in October, when Google is likely to introduce the next generation of the Pixel smartphone.
Huawei is also planning to launch a smartwatch with a great design idea. The company registered a patent to design a smartwatch that combines a smartwatch with a pair of fully wireless Bluetooth earbuds.
