Hawkeye FIREFLY 8 is based on a SONY IMX117 imaging sensor that guarantees superb 2K video quality – 2560 x 1440 px to be exact. You can also set movie recording to lower resolution, which makes video files smaller and saves space on the memory card. The Novatek NTK96660 processor ensures smooth playback and prevents frames skipping or sound stuttering, typical for low-cost cameras, especially as the six-axis gyroscope stabilizes images for even the most dynamic and crazy shots, like parachute jumping or high-wave surfing. In addition to standard recording you can also choose between time-lapse, slow motion and long exposure modes. Video files are stored on a MicroSD card that can have maximum capacity of 64 GB and are saved in the popular H.264 format, so you can play it straight on your computer, phone or smart TV.
Camera is controlled by the buttons located on the casing and by the 2-inch IPS touch screen that has a 640 x 320 px resolution. It’s bright and highly readable even under direct sunshine and thanks to the light sensor it even adjusts the brightness to the ambient light. Additional, more advanced options can be set up by using dedicated app and modifying many different settings. In addition, there is a small mirror on the front of the case that makes it easier to take a selfie. An interesting add-on available as a separate purchase is a Bluetooth wrist remote controller. It’s worth mentioning that FIREFLY 8 is one of the few action cameras that can be connected to an external microphone, which provides even better sound quality for your recording. This enables it to work not only as a sports cam, but for some serious video blogging or news casting.
Transferring video files to a computer or direct upload to Youtube is extremely easy. The camera can be connected to other devices via USB or a fast dual-channel 2.4 GHz WiFi that has a range of up to 10 meters.
Accessories and battery
In the box you’ll find a plethora of accessories, allowing convenient mounting to the bike handle, backpack or a ski helmet. Waterproof casing allows deep diving, so FIREFLY 8 will record your underwater adventures.
The 1200 mAh battery can record up to 1.5 hours in a single session, depending on the recording resolution. Most important, this is a standard detachable 4.35 V battery, which means that you can simply replace it with a charged battery to continue recording.
Hawkeye FIREFLY 8 is an affordable lightweight and high-resolution sports camera that can be used for shooting skiing, cycling, running or diving videos – and if you plug in an external microphone it can be even applied to more serious tasks. Attractive price and good performance makes it stand out from the rest of the crowd and this is definitely a great alternative to more expensive GoPro cameras that basically have the same features, but are several times more expensive.
