NEJE DK – BL 1500 mW: Laser Engraving Machine
Until recently it was virtually impossible to make CAD designed items in your home, because that’d require access to professional industrial machinery. But thanks to the advanced and inexpensive machines from China, you can now easily arrange a DIY workshop at your desk, designing objects and 3D printing them. In addition to popular 3D printers, GearBest has just started selling low-cost engravers that allow you to laser-burn pattern on plastic, wood, leather or rubber. See what NEJE DK – BL 1500 mW can do and what you can use it for.

How it works?
Technically, this is not actually an engraver with a mechanical drill, but a laser-burning CNC machine. It has precise stepper servomotors similar to those you’d find in 3D printers that are controlled by software and that can burn any pattern with a maximum size of 550 x 550 px on the surface up to 42 x 42 x 78mm, which gives a decent 350 DPI result. In this version the laser has a 1.5 W power (or 1500 mW – there are also 500 and 1000 mW variants available at GearBest, Aliexpress and Banggood), which allows you to burn plastic, wood or rubber at a maximum depth of 7.8 mm – depending on the material.
How to use it?
Burning your own images into wood is incredibly simple. The box holds a 1 GB MicroSD card containing drivers and software for Windows and iOS/Android. You don’t need to have any experience in CAD design and you can start engraving with just three clicks, by simply importing any .jpg or .bmp image into the software, adjusting size, and choosing burn depth. In addition, you need to manually set laser focal length, depending on the thickness of engraved object. Windows version has a bit more features than iOS or Android software for mobiles, and both versions control engraving process over Bluetooth.
NEJE DK – BL1500mw is really compact and will easily fit on any limited space desk. It also does not require assembling as most 3D printers do, and you can use it straight out of the box. Interestingly, despite having laser that can burn through wood and plastic, it doesn’t require much power to run. The NEJE engraving machine is powered by a standard 5V/1A power supply – which is a regular smartphone charger and even has a 6000 mAh battery, which allows achieving 1.5 W laser beam, sufficient for engraving most soft materials. It’s not powerful enough to burn through metal, glass or stone though, and it can’t burn clear plastic, because the beam will dissipate when going through transparent material. Construction is made of acrylic frame, stainless steel and aluminum parts, and according to the manufacturer, the laser is so durable, that it will work even after 100 000 hours. So no cutting corners here regarding quality and this is actually confirmed by the buyers that gave it a 4.6/5 rating on GearBest.
This inexpensive device perfectly complements 3D printers and will certainly be useful for all makers. You can easily create your own customized designs and even don’t need a PC to start engraving. You also don’t have to be CAD design expert, because user-friendly software will guide you through entire engraving process. Available for about $100 depending on store with inexpensive worldwide shipping, this is a nice addition to any DIY workshop!
